Week of Decmber 21, 2009
This last Friday December 18th we tested our IRIS relay.
One hundred parents were phoned or e-mailed by an
automated system indicating that we were testing the system.
The IRIS is our continuing movement into incorporating
technology to communicate with parents and students.
In the next week the system will be tested again and
before the students return on January 5th tested three more
times.
The message that will be broad casted will be: "Mr. Woods wants
to inform you..."
This will enable us to remind you of upcoming events in school
along with the ability to broadcast to the whole parent
community if there is closing for snow or there is an
emergency. The system will only be used to broadcast to
a class group of parents or the whole school community.
It will not be used to contact an individual parent
when a child is sick.
During the Christmas break we will be entering all
phone numbers that have been recorded on the
emergency card. Should those numbers have changed
you should contact Alba as soon as possible.
When testing the system we will be notified of
which numbers have "jumped back" as inaccessible.
I will then send a note home when your child returns
on January 5th.
H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccine Part II
The second dose of H1N1 vaccine will be administered
by the New York City Board of Health on
Tuesday January 5th.
Only those students who received the first vaccine here
at OLQM will be able to receive the second dose.
Parents who wish to be here and in some cases need
to be here are welcome. The vaccination process
will again take place in the library on the third floor.
Please call Alba and let her know that you plan to come
so that we can place the parents with child first in line
so that the parant can get to work.
Progress Reports
Progress Reports will be sent home with your child
on Monday December 21st. They are an indication of
your child's academic performance to date.
A numerical grade of 70.00 in a subject indicates
that your child is in danger of failing the subject.
Christmas Recess
Christmas Recess will begin after dismissal on
December 22nd and school will resume on
Tuesday, January 5, 2010. A 13 day hiatus from
school should not mean that there is a 13 day
hiatus from reading. A book or two should be
read to strengthen reading comprehension/vocabulary
skills.

Are you a "Helicopter Parent"?
On the November calendar it was mentioned that independent,
self learning children are those who are guided but not led to be
responsible. It was also mentioned that the place for parents to
drop off their child in the morning should be at the supply room for
students in grades 2-8.
Many parents have watched from the supply room as their child has rolled
their bookbag down the hallway and requested one of the older
students to assist them - they have become independent. Those
students have learned to do for themselves (being supervised by
the parent watching from the supply room) as they begin their
8 hour day in school.
Then there are parents who do the opposite and if you google
"Helicopter Parent" it will show scenarios of what happens
to children as they grow - unable to be successful in college
without the parent, unable to go for a job interview without a parent--
and where does it start - in school.
Help your child to help themselves by breaking away when you know that
they are in a safe environment. There are plenty of times that you as
their parent will have to step in when they are not in a safe environment!

The Superintendent of Schools Office has
asked parents that have their children attend
an extended day school to complete a survey
regarding the extended day program.
The survey is available in English or Spanish
for parents ease in completion.
Your child's teacher will hand out the survey
on Monday and we ask that the survey be
completed by Wednesday. Extra copies will
be available from Alba should parents need
an extra.
It is hoped that all parents complete the
form so that an accurate portrayal of the
program is represented to the
Superintendent of Schools Office.
As we approach the final week of the first quarter
of the 2009-2010 school year your child will
be administered a short exam to ascertain
the teaching/learning that was accomplished
this quarter. These exams will be administered
in all subject areas for students in grades
K-8. The vocabulary test this last Friday was
the first of these exams.
As a reminder to parents the quarter will end
November 3rd and report cards will be distributed
November 10th. Please remember that on November 10th

Final Note- It is my intention to open
the SIS (Student Information System)
Web mail for parents to
contact teachers during November. It is the
first step towards the complete opening
of the SIS system for teacher/parent/student
interaction about grades etc. Parents will
be requested to give Alba an email address
that they use regularly. Parents need to note
that we will enter only one e-mail address a year
so it should be an e-mail address that you will
have until June, 2010.
In December students will also be requested to give
Mr. Woods an e-mail address of their own so
that they will be able to review their grades.
Mr. Woods will first train the students in
January 2010 and then there will be a parent
meeting in January to explain the whole system.
Since the students are more savvy about using
e-mail and Internet web sites it is hoped that
they will assist their parents in understanding
the SIS system.
In January, Mr. Marcial will also have
the computer room open after school
to assist parents.

Definition of School Day
Parents were reminded on the October calendar
that the school day starts at 8:00 AM and ends at 4:00 PM.
Parents of students in grades PreK and Kindergarten
have not carefully read the Parents Handbook and/or
the October calendar defining the school day.
If you wish to pick up your child early
from school the proper procedure is to go to the school
office and sign your child out stating the time and reason
for picking up your child.
Parents and grandparents have been arriving at 3:30
expecting the teachers to stop their teaching which is
scheduled to go to 3:45 daily. The period from 3:45PM
until 4:00 PM is for cleanup and packing up book bags etc.
Beginning this week Mr. Woods will be in the auditorium
at 3:15 PM and the outside doors will be kept closed so that all
indoor doors may remain open. The auditorium doors will remain
closed until 3:55 PM wherein parents will be let in to pick
up their children. In the desire for school safety all parents or
other caregivers must remain outside the building
until the dismissal doors are opened.
Parents are reminded though that an early pickup is defined
as not completing the school day unless the child is
excused for a doctor's appointment - a note must be presented
the next day to the teacher.

Registration for Sacramental Programs
Dear Parents,
As mentioned at the opening meeting there will be registration of students for the Sacraments of
• Baptism (if they have not been baptized before)
• Reconciliation (Grade 2 students)
• First Holy Communion (Grade 3 students)
• Confirmation (7th grade students – a two year program)
Registration will take place Sunday September 20th from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM and Sunday September 27th from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM.
Anyone who wishes to enroll their child in one of the sacramental programs here at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs must understand that the child is required to attend the 1:00 PM Mass with their fellow classmates here at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church.
Registration will require you to bring your child’s Baptismal certificate. No one can register for a sacrament unless they present the child’s Baptismal certificate.
Third Grade students who will be enrolled for First Holy Communion must have already received the sacrament of Reconciliation in second grade. If they did not they must sign up for The Sacrament of Reconciliation this year and then receive First Holy Communion next year in 4th grade.
Classes for all students receiving the sacraments will begin in October and are listed on the yearly calendar. If you did not get a yearly calendar please stop by the school office for another calendar.
Should you have any questions you may address them to me on Sunday when you register your child. Please remember that you must bring your child’s baptismal certificate with you. If you believe that we already have a copy then call the office to have your child’s file checked. Unfortunately, many parents never brought the certificate in with them at the original registration which may have been when your child was enrolling for PreK.

H1N1- Swine Flu Letter for Parents
Dear Parents,
As influenza returns to New York City and State this fall, the health and well-being of our students, faculty and staff is our primary concern. The Superintendent’s Office in the Archdiocese of New York will continue to work intensively with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), local Departments of Health (DOH) and District Supervising Nurses to promulgate strategies for prevention and infection control in our schools. Our goal is to keep schools open, as long as it is in the best interests of our students and faculty.
Steps parents can take to help prevent the spread of infection are listed below.
These guidelines and additional educational materials are available for download on the CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/
Additional communications will be sent home to you as information becomes available.
• Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze and cough. Use a tissue and throw it away in a receptacle. Wash your hands after you sneeze or cough.
• Wash hands frequently with soap and water. Wash long enough to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice. Or, use gels or wipes with alcohol in them.
• Please follow the prevention guidelines provided by the CDC. Educational materials are available on the CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/
• Don’t get too close to people who are sick, if possible maintain a distance of three feet. If you get sick yourself, avoid close contact with other people.
• Any child with flu-like symptoms should remain home and seek medical treatment as needed. Influenza-like illness (ILI) is defined as fever with cough or sore throat.
• Children should stay home from school until they are well for at least 24 hours.
• Because certain people are at an increased risk of complications from H1N1 influenza, it is important that the following individuals seek medical attention if they exhibit flu-like symptoms:
o Pregnant women
o People with asthma, diabetes, chronic illnesses or other long term health problems
Again, the State Health Department and the State Education Department will continue to provide guidance that will help inform our decisions in the Archdiocese of New York. The health and safety of our students is our primary concern. Thank you for your support in protecting our students.
Sincerely,
Andrew G. Woods, principal
