Announcements Week of September 21, 2015

Uniform Company Update
A contract was signed with Flynn and O'Hara Uniform Company on Monday. They should have everything in place by October 1st so that parents may order uniforms. Again, I apologize for the mess that was created and in talking to other principals they have been experiencing the same problem. Hopefully, by the end of the week we will have a number for you to call or you will be able to visit their Bronx store. Just remember to say that your child attends Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in New York City as they have an account also with the Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School in Queens.

Achieve 3000
Students in grades 2 through 8 were administered Level Set testing this week by Achieve 3000.
Achieve 3000 is an online company that assists children in raising their Lexile Levels (Reading Levels). The students have been given their login and password information for the site and students should use the site at least 60 minutes a week. Their are numerous articles that are adjusted by the computer to assist the child in reading and comprehending at their level - what we call in education Differentiated Learning.
Most articles and the questions with the article take approximately 20 minutes to complete and students are given their score immediately upon completion.
The goal is to have your child score 75% on each reading they complete. After they have done this the program will then readjust their reading level to a higher standard.
Parents should make reading a daily exercise at home at the same time - whether it is before dinner, after dinner, when they come home from school.
At the first report card distribution representative from Achieve 3000 will be here to assist parents with questions they have concerning the program and how their child is progressing with the program.
Mrs. Bagley, Mr. Badia, Mrs. Ramsey and Ms. Serewko are the teachers working with the students and they may also be able to answer your questions or refer you to the parent portal for assistance.
Teachers will be giving assignments on readings in Achieve 3000 to keep students on task with the program and parents may assist by having their child read topics that are of interest to them or choose a career and the child may read about the work of people in that career.

IXL
IXL is also another online program to assist students in Mathematics and Reading. Mr. Marcial has been working with students in grades Kindergarten through 8 grade with this program and it may also be accessed at home. Students were given their logins and passwords.

Rowland Reading Online Access

Rowland Reading also has online activities for children in grades Kindergarten, First and Second grades. Teachers have or will this week send home login information for the program and many activities will cover topics that are being covered by the teachers.

A reminder that school is closed on Friday September 25 in celebration of the visit by Pope Francis.

Candy Bars
Candy Bars are available to assist parents in meeting their fund raising requirements as outlined on the contract signed during registration or re-registration. Leak in Ms. Larios class--grade 5
Many parents have expressed concern over the "leak" that resulted in part of the ceiling collapse near the windows of Ms. Larios class. It was recently found to be due to a broken steam pipe in the wall, behind the Smartboard, that resulted in condensation build up in the ceiling and wall behind the Smartboard. This past weekend Ransel was instructed to break the wall near the windowsill to permit the whole area to dry out. It will take a couple of weeks for the repair of the classroom to be completed as it is being covered by the school's insurance policy. There is no danger to students and when the construction begins the students in grades 5-8 will be sent to the science room like they were when the ceiling was initially leaking.

Report Card Day Friday April 24, 2015
The third quarter report card will be distributed to students on Friday April 24, 2015. Parent Teacher Conferences will be held from 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM in the auditorium. On this report card parents will be notified if their child will be required to attend summer school or be retained due to poor academic progress. There is still time to reverse the poor grade(s) from April to June.
Students in grades 5-8 who are in danger of retention in the grade will be REQUIRED to attend extended day classes from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM with Mr. Placido beginning April 27th. This program is for students failing 3 or more subjects in grades 5-8. Classes will be Monday to Thursday each week until the end of the 4th quarter in June. In this way the school has taken a proactive response to poor academic performance.

Mr. Woods was notified Friday that there are 17 regional scholarships that will be awarded based on income. The scholarship will be pro rated up to $2,900.00 a year based on the tax returns for 2014 for:
1. Students entering Kindergarten from Ms. Rodriguez's class;
2. Students in Kindergarten who are entering first grade and students in grades 1-6 entering from public/charter schools.
There are a limited number of scholarships and you should bring in your tax forms to Alba this week to apply for a scholarship. This is not a manana moment project - it is a now project as there will be no further scholarships after the 17 are exhausted.
3. As a reminder any family already receiving a scholarship are not entitled for a second scholarship under this program.

The New York State Mathematics Tests will be administered to students on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week.
Congratulations to parents for not opting out with the hysterical momentum that swept schools of not having children take New York State tests. The questions were never asked then when do we give students tests to gauge their knowledge? Every parent would want their child to become a doctor, an accountant, an actuary, a teacher and on and on -- each one of those professions require rigorous license testing. If students are not prepared at an early age that testing is part and parcel of the life experience of working when then are they to be trained without the panic? The New York Times this past week had an article on the fact that more and more corporations are requiring their new employees to take tests measuring their skills --yet parents are not training their children to be prepared for life's ups and downs if they have their child opt out of testing. Parents must understand that a one day test is not a full measure of their child's knowledge and that the results of the tests will assist them and their child's school determine what areas are in need of improvement.
Again, congratulations to parents!

Summer Uniform
Ideal Uniform Company will be here on Friday during the parent teacher conferences to measure students for the summer uniform which may be worn beginning May 1st. Navy blue shorts and school polo shirt with school logo. Black sneakers may also be worn.

NYSESLAT (New York State English as a Second Language) Testing
NYSESLAT testing will begin this week with the speaking component of the test for students who did not master the test in previous administrations. Parents were notified in November on the AIS (Academic Intervention Services) form that was distributed with the first report card.
