Week of February 1, 2016 Announcements



Registration 2016-2017 Kindergarten and Ms. Rodriguez's Class (PK-2)
Parents who are interested in enrolling their child in Kindergarten are required to register online with the Archdiocese of New York this Year.
Also, parents of students who are entering PreK-2 - Mrs. Rodriguez's class are required to register online.

ALL PARENTS WHO APPLY ONLINE ARE ELIGIBLE
TO RECEIVE A SCHOLARSHIP FOR THEIR CHILD.

The information for online registration is available by going to the link below. If you need assistance to apply/scan documents for scholarships etc. all office staff will be available to assist you.
A computer has been set up in the hallway outside Alan's office and another is inside his office for parents and Alan, Brianna and Alba will assist parents in scanning documents for the scholarship program.
New students coming from a public school, charter school etc. must also apply online and are eligible to receive a scholasrhip for their child.


Tuition Rates 2016-2017
The new tuition rates for the 2016-2017 year will be announced this week by the Board of Trustees for The Catholic School Region of Manhattan. Mr. Woods and Alan have a teleconference on Monday evening with the Board and the new rates will probably be discussed during the conference.

Cornerstone Student Information System - SIS
Cornerstone has been turned off this week until Mr. Woods has time to review report cards with the classroom teachers. It will be turned on Friday morning February 5th at 9:00 AM.

Report Cards and Tuition

As a reminder report cards will be distributed Friday, February 5th to students whose tuition is up to date.

Report cards will be distributed By Fr. Antonio to all students Friday morning in their classrooms.
Dismissal on Friday will be at 12:00 noon.
Parent Teacher Conferences will be held from 1:00 PM - 7:00 PM.

Grades 1-4 - Parent Conference Room- First Floor outside main office.
PreK-1, PreK-2, PreK-3, PreK-5 and PreK-5 along with Kindergarten will be held in their classrooms.

New York State Tests- Grades 3-8

Changes have been made to the New York State Tests for this year as announced this past Thursday by the New York State Education Department. These changes will be posted on the Engage New York Website by next week. The primary change is that the tests will not be timed giving the child ample time to complete all the tasks on the test.

Open House 9:00 AM -11:00 AM. Parents may visit their child's classroom and sit in during class and observe the teaching/learning occurring in the classroom.

Blessing of Throats 2:00 PM in Church led by the students of the 4th grade. Parents Welcome.

Week of January 25, 2016 Announcements



School will be OPEN MONDAY January 25, 2016
The doors above the Church will be open until 8:30 AM and no late passes will be issued. Parents and students are to take their time if traveling. Breakfast will be available until 9:00 AM for students arriving late due to travel.


Monday January 25, 2016
There will be a snowball fight at 12:15 PM in the backyard of the school for students who wish to participate. Students may wear dress down clothes and should have gloves if they wish to participate.

New Registration and Re-Registration procedures
New registration procedures have been put in place by the Archdiocese of New York for the 2016-2017 school year. Students entering PreK -1 (Mrs. Fundora) or PreK-2 (Mrs. Rodriguez's class) will be requested to register or re-register online with the Archdiocese. This will all begin February 1st and computers have been set up in the hallway outside Alan's office, inside Alan's office and inside the parent conference room to assist parents. Alba, Alan and Brianna will assist parents with the procedure and parents may also do so from home. The website is not up and running as of yet but when it does I will be sending home information.
Also, Alba, Mrs. Resto or Brianna will be calling parents to remind them to re-register by February 28th.

Financial Aid for Kindergarten and new students entering grades 1-6 from public or charter schools

Financial Aid (no longer will it be called scholarships) will be available for students entering Kindergarten here at OLQM. This also will be an online process that Mr. Woods will speak about at meetings he will have with parents from the PreK classes. Again, Alba and Brianna will be of assistance in filing for financial aid. They will scan documents needed etc. for the financial aid process for parents. Through the generosity of donors to the Archdiocese this financial aid will be available for ALL students entering Kindergarten in 2016.There will also be a hot line with TADS the company that has been hired to determine the eligibility and award amounts.
Students therefore in PreK-2, PreK-3, PreK-4 and PreK-5 are eligible for this financial aid. An information packet will be sent home this week and Mr. Woods will speak to parents in Miss Rodriguez, Miss Sanchez, Miss McGarry and Mrs. Reyes class this week.
Also, new students entering grades 1-6 from public or charter schools may apply for financial aid.

Registration for September 2016

At the request of the Manhattan Regional Office registration for new students will begin on Monday, January 25, 2016. There will not be a set registration date this year but all new registrations will begin on Monday January 25, 2016 and continue until the class closes. This is important for PreK-1 - Mrs. Fundora's class for students who are going to be 3 years old by December 31, 2016. If you have a child for Mrs. Fundora's class or know a parent who wishes to register their child for September please have them call ALba. More information will be sent home.

Tuition Rates 2016-2017
Mr. Woods was informed on Friday evening that there seems to have been an accounting error regarding the new tuition rates - please disregard the notice that I posted last week. As new information becomes available I will inform parents regarding the new rates.

The Feast of Our Lady of Altagracia, the patroness of the Dominican Republic will be celebrated on Thursday January 21st by the school.
The students of the 7th and 8th grade will be leading the school at Mass on Thursday at 9:00 AM. Parents are welcome.

Registration/Scholarships

On Thursday Mr. Woods will be attending a meeting regarding registration for the 2016-2017 school year. As of today we are to begin registration for new students for Kindergarten and re- registration of present students on February 1, 2016. Mr. Woods was also informed that scholarships will be available for students who are entering Kindergarten and new students coming from public schools in grades 1-6.
What do parents need to do --- the prerequisite for all scholarships is a copy of the 1040 tax form for 2015. I suggest therefore that parents who are interested in applying for a scholarship have their taxes filed as soon as possible.
Parents must understand that the scholarship top award is $2,000.00 based on the family income. The balance of tuition must then be paid by the parents.

As more information becomes available Mr. Woods will post it here on the blog. Parents are reminded to read the blog weekly.

Mr. Woods will be having a parent meeting for parents of students in Mrs. Fundora's class on Monday January 25th at 8:15 AM in the school library. This meeting will be for parents regarding registration for the 2016-2017 school year-- a flyer will be sent home.

Your child's score for the mid-terms will be posted on Cornerstone Student Information System on January 28th. If you need your login or password for the Cornerstone please Alan between the hours of 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM or send Mr. Woods an e-mail. The link for Cornerstone may be accessed by going to the school web page of olqmnyc.org and clicking the academics tag.

New Tuition Rates 2016-2017

The Board of Directors decided that the tuition rates will rise only 1% this year. All fees will remain the same as this year.
PreK tuition for Mrs. Fundora's and Ms. Rodriguez's class will remain the same as this year - there will be no raise for those two classes.
The rates begininng September will be:

Pre-K Rate 1 Child 4,600---$460.00 a month

K Thru 8th Rate 1 Child 4,250---$425.00 a month
2 Children 8,050---$805.00 a month
3 Children 10,140--$1,014.00 a month
4 Children 10,510--$1,051.00 a month

Interim Assessments # 2

The Archdiocesan Interim Assessments will be administered Tuesday January 26th and Wednesday January 27th. These assessments assist the teachers in understanding students strengths and weaknesses in Common Core State Standards skills.

Report Card Distribution - Friday February 5th.

Fr. Antonio will distribute report cards to all students whose tuition is up to date on Friday, February 5th.
Parent Teacher Conferences will be held from 1:00 PM - 7:00 PM.

Changes to the Weekly Blog - Lesson Plans now posted.

Beginning this week the teachers will have a link on their weekly blog wherein parents may view the weekly lesson plans of what their child is learning on a day to day basis. This will enable parents to see the specific standard being covered by the teacher from Engage New York Modules, the vocabulary that will be covered for the week, the classroom assignments etc.
The new plan book for lesson planning that the teachers have been working with since September has proven a useful tool and therefore parents access is the next step.

Happy New Year from everyone at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School

January Calendars
The monthly calendar will be distributed to students on Monday, January 4th.Parents are requested to read the calendar carefully. There are parent meetings for PreK students

Mid-Terms/Interim Assessments

Mid-Terms will be administered to students in grades 1-8 during the week of January 19th as per the Superintendent of Schools calendar.The material on the mid-terms will cover the important terminology and concepts that students have learned since September,2015. An outline of the important terms, concepts, facts that may be covered on the exams will be posted on the school blog by the teachers on Monday, January 11th.
Teachers will review the material to be covered on the exams with the students after they have posted the material on the blog. Material will be based on the CCSS modules that we have been following this year from Engage New York.
This year the Archdiocese has decided that an on-line Religion mid-term will be administered to students in grades 3-8.
All mid-term marks will be recorded in the SIS of Cornerstone which will then be posted on the report card which will be distributed on February 5th.
Mid-terms will be available for parent review on February 5th but MUST remain in the student's folder until June, 2016 in the classroom for review by the Board of Trustees educational committee.

Interim Assessment # 2

The second interim assessment will be administered to students on January 26th and January 27th as listed on the monthly calendar. The results are used to analyze concepts that must be reinforced with students by the teachers before the annual testing program that begins in the Spring.



New Science Project
A new School wide Science Project is being developed on the first floor of the school- a salt water tank through the generous contributions of alumni and friends and the hard work of Mr. Marcial.
Watch the tank develop over the next few weeks and students will be involved with the monitoring of the proper pH levels, the salt content along with myriad other tests that are need to re-create a marine environment.
