Week of January 4, 5 and 6 Announcements

A New Year’s Prayer

May God make your year a happy one!
Not by shielding you from all sorrows and pain,
But by strengthening you to bear it, as it comes;
Not by making your path easy,
But by making you sturdy to travel any path;
Not by taking hardships from you,
But by taking fear from your heart;
Not by granting you unbroken sunshine,
But by keeping your face bright, even in the shadows;
Not by making your life always pleasant,
But by showing you when people and their causes need you most,
and by making you anxious to be there to help.
God’s love, peace, hope and joy to you for the year ahead.

Survey Information Needed
Dear Parents,

Our school is participating in the
University of Notre Dame’s Catholic School Advantage Campaign.
An important element of that program is gathering feedback
from parents on their experiences with the school.
For that reason, we have created a brief survey
to provide an opportunity for you to share your opinions.
Please take a moment to complete the survey and participate
in the process of strengthening and energizing our school!

You can access the survey in English or Spanish through the following link:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/csany

Please complete the survey before January 19, 2012.
Only one person in each household needs to complete the survey.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THIS IMPORTANT EFFORT

Week of December 19th Announcements

I have always thought of Christmas time,
when it has come round, as a good time;
a kind, forgiving, charitable time;
the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year,
when men and women seem by one consent to open
their shut-up hearts freely, and to
think of people below them as if they really were
fellow passengers to the grave,
and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.
~Charles Dickens

St. Nicholas Day

St. Nicholas Day is celebrated around the world on December 6.
Many of the American traditions mimic the traditions
for St. Nicholas Day in Germany. The children leave out a boot
or a shoe on the evening of the 5th.
And if they have been good and kind throughout the year,
they will awaken to find the boot filled with treats.
Sound familiar?
Yes, the legend of Santa Claus comes from this Saint.
Instead of a boot, it's a sock.
The good little boys and girls get treats for their kindness.

Safe Environment Curriculum

Dear Parents,
Our Catholic tradition has always affirmed the
dignity of the human person as created in the image
and likeness of God. Every person with whom we come
in contact deserves to be seen by us with th eyes of
God. We know that ministry with children and youth,
in particular, is a sacred trust. We, at Our Lady
Queen of Martyrs School are committed to preserve,
at all times and in all places, this sacred trust
which is rooted in our faith in Jesus Christ.
In 2002, the United States Bishops approved
The Charter for the Protection of Children and
Young People in an effort to protect children
and youth from sexual abuse at ;all levels of
church life and to restore trust in a Church
scarred by the scandal of clergy and sexual
abuse. Article 12 of the charter directs all
dioceses to create programs and processes
to teach children and youth about sexual abuse
and prevention. In the Archdiocese of New York,
this training will be integrated this week.
October 24th-October 28th into the religious
education program in our school.
We thank you for your support and interest
as we partner to give our children the safest
possible environment to grow in faith, in
our parish, school and in our homes.

Sincerely,
Rev. Antonio Almonte, pastor

September 2, 2011

Dear Parents:

First, let me again thank you for the privilege of getting to participate in the education of your child[ren]. Your commitment to Catholic education is much appreciated.

I write today concerning a matter that impacts our school, our teachers and you as a supporter of our school and as a tuition paying parent. As you may be aware, the collective bargaining agreement with the Federation of Catholic Teachers (the "Federation"), the union that represents the teachers in our school, expired on August 31, 2011.

Unfortunately, after four months of negotiations with the Federation, we have been unable to reach an agreement. Not surprising in these extremely trying economic times, the key issue is wages and the corresponding salary cost/expense for the schools. While the proposal made by the schools is somewhat complex due to the various components that go into a teacher's salary – a Step component (or sometimes referred to as a longevity increase – a built-in increase based on years of service); a Parity component and an across-the-board increase – the fact is that under the school's proposal an average teacher's wages will increase by approximately 2.7% for the 2011/2012 school year and 3.7% for the 2012/2013 school year.

While I wish we could pay more, I think you will agree with me that in these economically trying times increases of 2.7% and 3.7% are extremely generous. I know that many of you are not receiving these levels of increases at your job. I can also share that all other Archdiocese employees have been subject to wage freeze for 2011/2012.

I know that many of you cannot afford increases in tuition that will be necessary to pay for increases of this level – let alone the increases that would be necessary based on the additional 2% to 2.25% the union is asking for on top of what we have offered.

In closing, please know that I will do everything I can to ensure that a new collective bargaining agreement is reached – but not at the expense of seeing additional schools forced to close and/or seeing more children forced out of Catholic education to pay for unrealistic salary increases.

Very truly yours,

Dr. Timothy McNiff

Superintendent of Schools

Archdiocese of New York

Letter sent home with students in grades 2, 3, 4, 7 & 8
regarding the Sacramental Program

September 8, 2011

Dear Parents,

As mentioned at the opening meeting there will be registration of students for the Sacraments of

· Baptism (if they have not been baptized before)

· Reconciliation (Grade 2 students)

· First Holy Communion (Grade 3 students)

· Confirmation (7th and 8th grade students – a two year program)

Registration will take place Sunday September 11th from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM and Sunday September 25th from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM.

Anyone who wishes to enroll their child in one of the sacramental programs here at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs must understand that the child is required to attend the 1:00 PM Mass with their fellow classmates here at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church.

Registration will require you to bring your child’s Baptismal certificate. No one can register for a sacrament unless they present the child’s Baptismal certificate.

Third Grade students who will be enrolled for First Holy Communion must have already received the sacrament of Reconciliation in second grade. If they did not they must sign up for The Sacrament of Reconciliation this year and then receive First Holy Communion next year in 4th grade.

Classes for all students receiving the sacraments will begin in October and are listed on the yearly calendar. The yearly calendar has been posted on the blog for your convenience.

Should you have any questions you may address them to me on Sunday when you register your child. Please remember that you must bring your child’s baptismal certificate with you. If you believe that we already have a copy then call the office to have your child’s file checked. Unfortunately, many parents never brought the certificate in with them at the original registration which may have been when your child was enrolling for PreK.

Sincerely,

Andrew G. Woods

Welcome Back Parents!

August 11, 2011

Dear Parents,

I hope that this letter finds you well and that you and your family are having an enjoyable summer.

The beginning of August always signals that the time is fast approaching for school to begin as the air waves are full of back to school sales on everything from pencils to laptops.

You should have received a registration letter for the After School Program along with a registration form for the tuition company.

If you are interested in enrolling your child in the After School Program I ask that you bring the papers with you to the office before September1st. The program will begin on the first day of school September 7th at dismissal (3:00 PM).

Many parents have called requesting information on the supplies needed for school for the upcoming year. I have requested that the teacher’s post their back to school supply list on this school blog. I suggest that you bookmark this page on your computer as you will be referring to the school blog many times this year for weekly announcements, homework assignments and the comings and goings of your child’s class. For those parents who are new to OLQM I welcome you and I have listed below the names of the teachers with the grades so that as you review the blog you will know your child’s teacher’s name to view the supply list.

This year the yearly calendar will be posted at the top of the blog spot. Should you want to check an specific date just click on the link at the top of the blog. Our consistent and continued movement to be more earth friendly will save 5,000 pieces of paper with this new feature.
